Portugal is the most complete golf destination in Europe. The Algarve alone has more than 40 courses within an hour of Faro airport, most laid out through umbrella pines, cork oaks and along Atlantic cliffs — and the climate means you can play in shirtsleeves in January.
It is also outstanding value. A week of golf at good resort courses costs a fraction of a single round at a championship links, flights from the UK and northern Europe are short and frequent, and English is spoken everywhere. For a first overseas golf trip, or an annual society tour, nowhere is easier.
The two main bases are the central Algarve (Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo) for concentration and variety, and Lisbon (Comporta, Oitavos) for links-style golf and city life. Most visitors pick the Algarve and never regret it.

Fly to Faro, settle in Vilamoura
Land at Faro, pick up a hire car and check into Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago (20–30 min). Loosen up on the range and eat at the marina.
Vilamoura Old Course
Ease in on the pines-and-doglegs classic five minutes from base. A gentle, strategic opener rather than a card-wrecker.
Quinta do Lago (South)
The tournament course — the step up in class and conditioning. Save something for the water carries on the back nine.
Beach, old town or practice
A day off the course: the beaches at Falésia and Praia da Marinha, the old town of Faro or Tavira, or a short-game session. Recover for the big two.
San Lorenzo
Estuary-side golf through the Ria Formosa reserve — arguably the most beautiful round of the week. Booking ahead is essential.
Monte Rei (North)
The 45-minute drive east is repaid with Portugal's top-ranked course and its faultless presentation. The trip's showpiece round.
Fly home
A morning by the pool or a quick nine before returning the car at Faro. Total driving across the week is under three hours.
Good to know
When to go
February to May and October to November are the sweet spots — warm, dry and far cheaper than the peak of March or the school holidays. July and August are hot; play early and rest in the afternoon.
Booking & tee times
Top courses (Monte Rei, San Lorenzo, Quinta do Lago) book up weeks ahead in peak season and often have dress codes and handicap requirements. Resort courses are more flexible. Buggies are widely available and worth it in the heat.
Getting around
A hire car is the easiest way to reach a spread of courses; the A22 motorway runs the length of the Algarve. Most central-Algarve courses are within 30–45 minutes of each other.
Value
Twilight and multi-round packages cut green fees significantly, and the shoulder seasons are far cheaper. A week of good golf here still costs less than a single round at many marquee links.
