Golf in Scotland — The Ultimate Guide

The Links Heartland

Ayrshire's links corridor — Royal Troon, Turnberry Ailsa and Prestwick — has hosted more Open Championships than anywhere else. East Lothian's "Golf Coast" packs Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane and Dunbar into a short stretch of coastline. Fife gives you St Andrews, Kingsbarns and Crail Balcomie within an hour of each other.

Highland & Remote Golf

Royal Dornoch in Sutherland is consistently ranked a top-5 course in the world and remains refreshingly affordable. Brora, Castle Stuart and Nairn are nearby. The far north and islands — Machrihanish Dunes, Askernish on South Uist — offer wild, remote golf found nowhere else on earth.

Inland Classics

Scotland is not just links. Gleneagles' King's and Queen's courses in Perthshire are among Britain's finest parkland venues. Blairgowrie, Taymouth Castle and Strathmore offer superb inland golf at a fraction of the price of the famous links.

Green Fees & Booking

Scottish golf spans every price point. Municipal courses charge from £15; inland parkland courses typically £25–£60. Coastal links run £50–£150+, while Open Championship venues like Royal Troon and St Andrews Old Course command £220–£300+. Many clubs have no visitor restrictions — simply book in advance. The ballot for the Old Course opens a year ahead.
